We went to Derwent Reservoir over the weekend for a muddy walk. The weather wasn’t that great but it didn’t rain so I’m happy with that.

We managed to walk almost 8km with Oscar and Casey! Quite impressive actually. This is one of the longest walks I’ve done! Or at least since I started recording the walks with my Apple Watch.

I’m trying to close all of my rings on my Apple Watch. How are you doing with that? I have a very sedentary job, so I was glad to get out and go for a big walk to stretch my legs.

It was cloudy and we had our coats on, but we were all hot on the inside after walking up the hills.

I’d definitely recommend wearing boots for a walk here if it had rained in the past week. It was so muddy! I had to hold Casey’s hand many times as he purposely squelched through patches of mud.

It was a shame that we weren’t able to cross the dam here. We walked the wrong way for dam crossing. We walked north instead of south. If you take the southern route from the car park, it takes you to a different section of the dam where there is a crossing and more beautiful scenery.

Tin Town at Derwent Reservoir was originally built as a community for workers from the nearby lead mines. Officially called Birchinlee it’s one of the many villages that have been submerged when making dams and reservoirs that are scattered around the Peak District.

We walked the wrong way and didn’t see any of the submerged structures, but judging by the waterline we probably would have seen them if we’d have walked the right way. After the 8km walk the little ones didn’t have the energy to continue the walk in the right direction. Maybe next time.

Even though it was so cloudy, it was still very bright. Hard to see from these photos though.

I had a slight wardrobe malfunction and put on the wrong socks for this walk! I wore my trainers to drive the car and then we all changed to boots when we arrived. The problem was that I had trainer socks which kept sliding off in the boots. It was so uncomfortable so I ended up taking the socks off!

Note to self – wear long socks when I plan to wear boots!

In future, if I visit here again I think I’d like to go in spring or summer. Although the crowds will be crazy at that time so that’s something to consider.

This place is very suitable for groups of any kind since there weren’t any extremes in terms of altitude, climbing over obstacles etc. It was mostly slight inclines and wide open paths.

One regret about going here is not taking the bikes for the little ones. I think they’d have loved it more and not been tired towards the end.

See you next time! There’s lots more to come!
