Well, our family holiday at Haven Devon Cliffs has taken a rather unexpected turn!
Storm Austen is making its presence felt, and I’m currently sitting inside a caravan that’s rocking so much I’m genuinely starting to wonder whether we’re about to take off! 😂
The wind outside is absolutely relentless. Every powerful gust seems to shake the entire caravan, and being fairly high up on the holiday park probably isn’t helping matters.
I was planning to head out and charge the Tesla tonight, but that idea has well and truly gone out the window. The battery can wait. I’m not risking being blown halfway across Devon just to plug the car in!
What started as a relaxing family holiday is beginning to feel like a natural disaster in the making.
And We’ve Got to Drive Home Tomorrow!
To make things even more interesting, we’re supposed to be checking out tomorrow morning and making the four-hour drive back home to Nottingham.
Under normal circumstances, that’s straightforward enough. But with the storm passing through, I’m not particularly enthusiastic about taking the family onto the motorway in these conditions!
We’re now considering whether we might need to find somewhere safe to stop along the way, rather than attempting the entire journey in one go. Hopefully the weather improves by morning, but we’ll have to see what we’re dealing with.
And, of course, there’s still the small matter of charging the Tesla!
How Strong Are These Caravans Anyway?
Here’s something I’ve never really thought about before: just how much wind can a static caravan actually withstand?
They’re obviously designed to cope with British weather, but when the entire thing is moving around you, it’s difficult not to feel slightly concerned.
Looking at the weather map, there’s an enormous swirling storm system just off the southwest coast, with the app showing winds of 31 mph at our location. It certainly feels a lot more dramatic when you’re sitting inside a rocking caravan!

I’ve not seen much discussion about what it’s actually like for people staying in holiday parks during this storm, but surely we can’t be the only ones feeling a little nervous tonight?
Hopefully, by tomorrow morning, we’ll still be in exactly the same spot we started in, the caravan will still have its roof, and we’ll manage to get everyone home safely.
Anyone else at Devon Cliffs or another Haven holiday park tonight? How are your caravans holding up?
Wish us luck! 😂🌪️
